Top 5 Roles Played by Philip Seymour Hoffman

Philip Seymour HoffmanThe world was hit with tragic news over the weekend by the death of Academy Award-winning actor, Philip Seymour Hoffman. The man brought something special to each film he’s ever appeared in, regardless of the size of his role. I can’t even think about the movie Twister without yelling, “the Extreme!” We at Geek Legacy are deeply saddened by his death, and I wanted to share with you our list of the top 5 roles played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.

#5 Along Came Polly

Hoffman took on the role of a washed-up child actor named Sandy Lyle. In the film, he’s struggling with his acting career and has recently landed a role in an amateur revival of the rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. The movie has its moments, and almost all of them involve Hoffman’s character. Check out this hilarious basketball scene and “let it rain!”

#4 Mission Impossible III

This movie is arguably my favorite in the franchise, and Mr. Hoffman has a lot to do with that. He plays a ruthless arms dealer named Owen Davian, who will stop at nothing to get his hands on a new weapon known as the rabbit’s foot. The film’s opening scene gives us a taste of Davian’s cruelty and sets the tone for the entire film. Please skip to the 40 second mark to bypass the long black screen.

#3 Charlie Wilson’s War

Another amazing performance by Hoffman who plays Gust Avrakotos, an angry spy who’s trying to do the right thing for our country and mistreated people all over the world. His character steals the show, and even when he’s upset, you’ll still find yourself laughing. The video posted above has Gust telling his boss to go f*** himself and it’s glorious.

#2 Boogie Nights

Boogie nights will always have a special place in my heart as one of my favorite films as a young adult. It’s just one of those movies with so much substance underneath its explicit surface. My takeaway from this film is that family is everything. Sure you’ll have arguments and disagree on things, but when it’s all said and done, family is what’s most important. Watch the heart-breaking moment when Scotty (Hoffman) tries to put the moves on Dirk (Wahlberg).

#1 The Big Lebowski

Coming in hot at #1 is Philip Seymour playing the role of Brandt, Jeffrey Lebowski’s personal assistant. Hoffman and Bridges share a wonderful chemistry in this movie, and I can’t help but smile each time Brandt cringes in disbelief. His expressions, silly laugh, and overall sense of nervousness just hits a home run every second he’s on screen.

Obviously Philip Seymour Hoffman has played some amazing roles, and we would love to hear which are your favorites. Please add them in the comments section below or shoot me a tweet @Edgyarmo, and I’ll mention it on tonight’s Geek Legacy podcast.
