Top 10 Most Anticipated Films in 2014

Posted on January 5, 2014 at 9:00 am by Justin Cavender

The new year is upon us, and with it comes a plethora of exciting new films for us to geek out over the next 12 months. There are upwards of 25 films I’m personally looking forward to, but I wanted to narrow that list down to 10. Not an easy task! If I neglect to mention a title that you’re super pumped about, add it in the comments at the end since not everything that’s geek-worthy this year made it into this list.

“Why is America so robo-phobic?” That’s an excellent question Mr. Jackson, and I hope the Robocop reboot will help answer it. I can’t even begin to tell you what a huge fan I am of the original Robocop, and while some folks out there will argue against reboots, remakes, and even sequels, I’m behind this film 100%. That’s not to say it will be better than Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 ultra-violent classic, but I’m definitely optimistic that I’ll walk out of the theater with a robo-smile on my face. The film will be released on February 12 and stars Joel Kinnamen, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, and Jackie Earl Haley.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

The Captain is back, complete with shield-throwing, face-smashing, butt-kicking action! It’s no secret that I wasn’t a fan of Captain America: The First Avenger, but Steve Rogers won me over in The Avengers, and I found myself growing giddy after watching the trailer for The Winter Soldier. Marvel has been on a hot streak over the last few years, and they aren’t looking to cool their jets anytime soon. The film hits theaters April 4 and stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, and Frank Grillo.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

“Not everyone has a happy ending,” which shouldn’t surprise you guys, especially if you read Spider-Man comics. I’m convinced I’ve said “poor Peter Parker” at least 100 times in my comic book reading career, and I’ll likely say it again when the credits roll. Hopefully, the abundance of villains doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of moviegoers. I’ll admit the Rhino is one of my least favorite spidey-villains, but after watching the trailer on IMAX 3D, I can’t wait to see Spider-Man in action. The adventure begins May 2, and the film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, and Paul Giamatti.

Godzilla, ’nuff said. The radioactive monster smashes into theaters on May 2 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Bryan Singer returns to direct our favorite mutants as they battle to prevent the end of mutant and mankind. Our excitement for this movie is off the charts, and that all started last year at SDCC when the entire cast showed up on stage to answer questions. A few weeks ago, Singer took to Twitter announcing another X-Men movie in 2016, featuring the ultimate mutant, Apocalypse. Someone open a window—this geek is about to pass out! The war begins on May 23 and the mutant ensemble consists of Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Peter Dinklage, and a million more.

Edge of Tomorrow

During the Geek Legacy podcast we joked about Edge of Tomorrow being a cross between Starship Troopers and Groundhog Day. Please take a second to say that out loud and let it sink in. Also know that you’re not alone if you think this idea sounds like it’s going to be a winner. Throw in an A-list action star, and you have yourself an awesome movie. Regardless of whether the story ends up being terrible, we’re excited to see all the creative ways in which Mr. Cruise will have to face death over and over. Bill Murray was able to save Groundhog Day, so let’s see if Cruise can make it past tomorrow. The film loops in theaters on June 6, and stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, and Bill Paxton.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel is mixing things up a bit with a group of ragtag heroes known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. An official trailer hasn’t been released, but we’ll get to see a trigger happy raccoon, talking tree, and a smoking hot green warrior—what else do we need? Guardians hits theaters August 1 and stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Lee Pace, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, and Dave Bautista.

The Expendables 3

We all know that I’ll watch anything with Jason Statham in it and throwing 15 other action stars my way certainly ups the ante. This time around Barney (Stallone) and Christmas (Statham) take on Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who was a former member of the Expendables and is now an arms dealer. I can’t wait to see the bullet-fest shoot off like a geyser. The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, Terry Crews, Jet Li and opens in theaters on August 8.

Did someone say Christopher Nolan? Sign me up! The man knows how to make amazing films, and it would be hard to argue otherwise. I barely know anything about Interstellar except that Matthew McConaughey’s character believes humans haven’t reached their full potential, and we need to look to the stars. Buckle up kids, we’re going to outer-space! The film stars Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine and opens November 7.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again

I know some of you are already sick of these movies, and rightfully so. I think most folks out there were cool with The Hobbit being two movies, but not three, and definitely not waiting a year between each one. Either way, I love Middle-Earth and adore every hour spent in Peter Jackson’s vision. December can’t come soon enough! The film stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lily, and Orlando Bloom.

There is our list of the Top 10 most anticipated films in 2014. I’m sure we missed plenty of films that are on your list for must-see movies in 201. Do you wanna see 300: Rise of an Empire, 22 Jump Street, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, TMNT? Let us know in the comments below!
