Top 10 actors that should be in The Expendables 3

The Expendables

There are many things about the 1980s that we look back on and cringe. Shoulder pads, acid wash jean jackets, synthesizers, Yuppies and the list goes on and on. If there is one thing most of us can agree on it’s that the 80s gave us some great movies. One genre in particular really came alive and left a legacy behind that can’t be ignored: The Action Film. Finally audiences everywhere could sit back, relax and watch stuff blow up for the sake of sheer entertainment. The storytelling, dialogue and acting weren’t always stellar but in this genre, nobody cared. So when Sylvester Stallone, an icon of that generation, released The Expendables in 2010, our imaginations and nostalgia went wild. Finally we could see our favorite action stars come together in one epic film. A love letter to all the dedicated fans that for years had been hoping for a grand finale to a genre they had grown to love. Fast forward to 2013, Stallone is now writing his 3rd and possibly last installment of this franchise. While the series has already utilized the likes of Stallone himself, Schwarzenegger, Willis, Van Damme and many more, in the spirit of the upcoming 3rd film here is my list of Top 10 actors I would like to see in The Expendables 3.

10. Lou Ferrigno

Lou Ferrigno

Best known for being the Hulk in the 1978 TV Series The Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno would fit in nicely as a bruiser in the new film. His recent re-emergence in the world of entertainment, thanks to cameos in multiple Marvel films, could help him earn a spot on the coveted team. Lou is also still in great shape, so his inclusion in the series would make sense on multiple levels. I think it’s time we see him “Smash” one last time.

9. Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood has been rumored to be in the movie for some time but nothing has been confirmed. I believe he is a great choice to play a mentor to Barney Ross (Stallone). At 82 years old, I think he would serve the film better in a cameo role rather than a spot on the Expendables but if watching Gran Torino taught us anything, it’s that Clint Eastwood can still kick some serious ass!

8. Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan

Although not officially announced, Stallone has strongly hinted that Jackie Chan will appear in the film and I think it’s a perfect fit. Jackie Chan is a recognizable star whose presence will open the film to a whole new audience. Chan is quick on his feet and can deliver some classic over the top action. He can also add some comic relief which fits in the direction Stallone has said this movie will go in.

7. Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson

This probably won’t be a popular pick but hear me out. “Iron” Mike Tyson was once considered the “most dangerous man on the planet”. He polarized the boxing world and haunted young gamers as the last boss in Punch-Out!! (It will always be Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! to me). Mike Tyson is one of those guys that you can’t help but be fascinated by because you just never know what he will do next. Add to all that a recent string of appearances in The Hangover franchise and you got a guy ready to knock some teeth in the 3rd Expendables film.

6. Wesley Snipes

Wesley Snipes

Originally cast in the first film before legal troubles caused him to drop out, Wesley Snipes has been a name floating around this franchise since it was first announced. Thanks to amazing performances as the titular character in the Blade trilogy and the unforgettable Simon Phoenix in Demolition Man, Snipes is the perfect choice to be cast in this film. Even though he would fit into the group really well, I think it’s as the main villain that he would shine the most. Who wouldn’t want to see a second round of Stallone vs Snipes?

5. Jesse Ventura

Jesse Ventura

Actor, wrestler, governor, there is nothing Jesse “The Body” Ventura hasn’t done. Having appeared alongside the likes of Stallone and Schwarzenegger before in movies such as Predator, Demolition Man and Running Man (Nope, Batman & Robin never happened in my universe), Ventura has proven that he can act next to the best of them. However it’s the prospect of having two former state governors facing off that makes him such a high pick on my list.

4. Steven Seagal

Steven Seagal

Seagal made it pretty clear that he does not wish to appear in this franchise but there is no denying that he is a glaring omission to the series. He is one of the pioneers of the genre and brought a unique character that would have fit in perfectly. I wouldn’t hold my breath but stranger things have happened. Let’s hope Seagal has a change of heart and appears in the film.

3. Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan

When I think of the 80s, one of the first things that come to mind is Hulk Hogan. Nobody could captivate a live audience like the Hulkster. Having grown up as a “Hulkamaniac” myself, there is almost no one I would like to see more in this movie than Hulk Hogan. Sure his movies have been less than stellar (looking at you Mr. Nanny) but there is no denying his presence and what it could do to this film. Let’s just hope Stallone can find a way to fit in old “Thunderlips” for the new Expendables film.

2. Mr.T

Mr. T

Similarly to Hulk Hogan, Mr. T is one of those characters that really defined the 80s with a unique style that no one can forget. Whether it was as B.A. Baracus, Clubber Lang or just himself, Mr. T was cool as hell. Who else on this list was awesome enough to have cereal named after him? Nobody! I think his appearance in the movie would trump even the fabled Chuck Norris cameo in the second installment. I pity the fool who doesn’t think so!

1. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

Fast 5

This may or may not be a controversial pick given that he is not an action star of the 80s, having only started to appear in films in 2001’s The Mummy Returns, but there is no denying that he is the future of action films. It is with that in mind that I put him first on this list. Schwarzenegger had a quick passing of the torch to the Rock in The Rundown but this film would be the opportunity to do it more justice. I believe he has proven himself worthy by not only starring in good action films, but also by improving established franchises simply with his presence. Sure, not all his film are good (Doom) but everyone on this list have also been in some stinkers. Fact of the matter is, I truly believe any movie that has the Rock is automatically 25% better than it would have been otherwise. I hope he is cast in this movie and shows everyone once again what the Rock is cookin’.

Bonus Pick: Sigourney Weaver

Sigourney Weaver

I didn’t put any women on this list so I thought I would throw this in as a bonus entry. There have been mumblings of making a female version of the Expendables. I don’t know if this will ever get past the rumors stage but it does make for an intriguing debate. Who should be in a female version of the Expendables? Maybe it’s a list I will write one day if I get enough interest in the subject. In the meantime I wanted to showcase one lady I would not only consider for a females Expendables but a lady whom I believe would be just as good in this version of the Expendables. Sigourney Weaver is someone I would love to see pick up a weapon and blast away once again. Her legacy as Ripley in the Alien franchise is undeniable. She is someone who would hold her own next to anyone, male or female. If we are lucky, maybe we’ll get to see it sooner rather than later.

So there you have it folks. My top picks for the Expendables 3. I would love to hear your thoughts on who deserves a spot on this legendary team. I know everyone has their favorites and that’s what makes this genre so awesome. So many great people to choose from!

    • Sandro

1, 3 and 6 are my favorites picks of the list but those are all guys I would love to see in that movie!

    • Lila

I'm really looking forward to the all female Expendables. Should be a lot of fun.

    • Max

This is a solid list. Well done! I would maybe add Vinnie Jones, Vin Diesel and maybe Samuel L. Jackson. Who doesn't want to see Sam Jackson in this? Hoping to see that womans list as well.

      • Erik

See I was thinking of other actors that hadn't made this lost and Vin Diesel is one I came up with. I had not even thought of Samuel L. Jackson. He'd be able to just let loose and kick all kinds of ass… while talking serious shit haha.

      • Stephen

I am kicking myself for not thinking of Sam Jackson! Maybe he needs to make more movies so that ill remember him next time 😉 Thanks for the vote of confidence!

    • Erik

Great list, mine would be very similar. I like your reasoning behind each of them however. And Sigourney Weaver is someone I'd love to see in this flick. She'd be an epic presence amongst the boys!
