Toki Tori 2 Review – A Relaxing and Cute Puzzler for Wii U

Toki Tori 2

Toki Tori 2 is an open-world puzzle adventure game developed by Two Tribes and is available on the Nintendo Wii U eShop. The game features adorable graphics and a host of delightful characters, including birds, frogs, crabs, and of course the lovable chick, Toki Tori. While exploring the forest, you will solve countless puzzles to get to the end of each level; and in the process, you’ll discover a creepy black goo that’s threatening your home and its inhabitants.

The adventure begins immediately without any instructions or tutorial. This really isn’t a problem because the controls are super basic and limited to the d-pad and A/B buttons. Armed only with the ability to whistle and stomp, you set out on your journey exploring all the hidden gems the forest has to offer. Players will quickly grasp the concept of the game by influencing the creatures around you to progress forward in the story. For example, when you whistle, a crab will move closer or further away from you. When players stomp on the ground, a bird might fall from a branch and the frog will eat it, thus causing the frog to burp a bubble for you to ride to reach higher ground. It all sounds silly, but it really adds to the cuteness factor.

Toki Tori 2While most puzzles are fairly easy to figure out, there are times when you solve them by mistake. Sure it’s fun to keep the story moving forward, but it feels a little weird when discovering the solution by accident. There were a few occasions when I found myself really stumped. My first water level puzzle had me going for more than a few minutes. I actually had to step away and come back with a clear head. It’s challenges like these that make puzzle games so fun and give the players that awesome feeling of accomplishment when they finally figure it out.

Toki Tori 2 does have a slow place to it, but in some cases that is a welcome alternative to my video game library. I’m not always in the mood to load up first-person shooters, dungeon crawlers, fighting games, or MMOs. Sometimes, I just want to relax and enjoy the scenery and that’s exactly what Toki Tori 2 has to offer. The Wii U GamePad also acts a camera, so kids can take pictures of their favorite creatures and environments. Sure it’s not for everyone, but if you love puzzles, have kids, or enjoy super cute games, Toki Tori 2 is certainly an excellent choice.
