The Walking Dead spinoff series has an official title, and it’s probably not one people were expecting. While the all-important brand recognition led many to think the series would have a sort of subtitle, like The Walking Dead: Biters, it appears that AMC and executive producer Robert Kirkman have settled on something a little more straightforward: Fear the Walking Dead.

Insert cricket sounds here. It doesn’t seem like anyone’s really a fan of this moniker, regardless of the potential quality of the series. Honestly it feels akin to Star Trek Into Darkness, but it’s not like Fear the Walking Dead even gives people an idea as to what the show is about. Yes, zombies are scary. So are the metaphorical “walking dead.” This title does nothing to set this show apart from the original series, which is maybe the point.

The admittedly impressive ensemble is led by Kim Dickens (Gone Girl, Deadwood) as a guidance counselor and Cliff Curtis as a divorced teacher, with Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm) filling out the cast. Dave Erickson serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside The Walking Dead graphic novel creator/series executive producer Kirkman.

With the unveiling of the title today and a summer premiere date for the six-episode first season looming, I wouldn’t be surprised if the first trailer for Fear the Walking Dead (again, this is the show’s actual title) played during the season finale of The Walking Dead this Sunday. Get used to the title, as AMC picked up the spinoff series for two seasons.
