THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME Hitting the UK Virtual Console; Is North America Next?

The real Zelda Wii U is at least a year away, and may or may not even be technically Zelda Wii U anymore—if it comes to the Nintendo NX, for instance. But we’re getting another Zelda game much sooner, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The ultimate Nintendo 64 classic is coming to Wii U Virtual Console very soon. Which is nice, since Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterpiece that should be played on a big screen with a proper controller. The game is coming out in Europe imminently, with North America presumably to follow.

According to the Legend of Zelda’s European Facebook page, as uncovered by NintendolifeOcarina of Time is debuting on the Wii U Virtual Console this Thursday. We don’t have confirmation about a North American Virtual Console release date yet, but these releases are usually relatively in sync. It stands to reason that we’ll see Ocarina of Time fairly soon.

And it’s a good thing. Ocarina of Time 3D, one of the early titles for the Nintendo 3DS,becoming increasingly hard to find in stores, and Nintendo isn’t making more of them. You can only pick it up on the secondary market, and usually for a slightly inflated price. Why Nintendo allows things like that to happen, cough…Amiibos, nobody knows, but there it is. And if you want to play Ocarina on the Wii U, of course, sheiklinkthis will be the only way.

Bear in mind that Ocarina of Time on Wii U Virtual Console won’t be the enhanced version of Ocarina of Time 3D. It’ll most likely be a pretty straight port of the Nintendo 64 version, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Although we’ll miss out on the original Fire Temple music and the great improvements they made to the Water Temple.

Ocarina of Time still holds up very well… maybe not in terms of the graphics, but the gameplay remains exceptional. If you’ve somehow never played it before, you should certainly pick it up. And if you’re a completionist or a collector, then it’s a must. It’s out on Thursday in Europe, and soon in North America. Will you be picking it up?
