THE BLOB Remake is Officially a Thing; Simon West Will Direct

I try to keep an open mind about remakes but it’s harder when the reboot in question is The Blob. I understand that a lot of people love The Blob, but I never understood the terror involved in a slow movie, formless ooze that you can easily get away from. In addition to the news that there will be a remake, we also learned that Expendables 2 director Simon West will helm this iteration of the horror classic.

There’s no word on a screenwriter or cast yet, but Goldcrest is aiming to start shooting The Blob remake this summer.  Per Deadline, Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten will produce.

West says that his approach will be more modern:

“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”

While I agree that there is no point in a remake if you are just going to do the same thing you did previously, but I think that a lot of the charm of the the original and the horror genre in general is the homespun feel. I don’t know how a sleeker version of The Blob will pan out, but I am constantly frustrated at all the negativity remakes get. People will hate on it because it is a remake, when they should be hating on it because it is dumb concept to begin with.
