TERMINATOR: GENISYS Empire Cover Offers Us a Heavily Photoshopped Arnold Schwarzenegger

The upcoming rebootquel Terminator: Genisys graces the cover of the latest Empire Magazine, as does some questionable use of Photoshop. The film finds Thor: The Dark World director and The Sopranos veteran Alan Taylor stepping into the director’s chair to relaunch the franchise. Instead of starting over from scratch after the unsuccessful prequel/reboot Terminator: Salvation, however, Paramount Pictures’ new film toes the line between reboot and sequel.

Terminator: Genisys begins by treading the territory of James Cameron’s original The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, with adult John Connor (Jason Clarke) sending trusted military confidant Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back in time to battle a Terminator that has also been sent back in terminator-genisys-arnold-schwarzenegger1-600x372time with the purpose of killing Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and, therefore, preventing John from ever being born. But when Courtney’s Reese lands in the year 1984, things are very different, as Sarah is already fully aware of the Terminator threat and is much more the hardened warrior of T2 rather than the (justifiably) confused civilian from The Terminator.

Buzz on Genisys hasn’t exactly been strong after the initial trailers seemed to underwhelm audiences, and I imagine this new Empire cover isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. It’s silly to judge a movie’s quality by a magazine cover, but it’s tough to deny that the Arnold Schwarzenegger on this cover has been heavily retouched—I’m fairly certain that’s not his body.

The Empire cover mainly serves to tell audiences that Schwarzenegger is indeed “back” in Genisys, and he plays a major role in the film, portraying an aged Terminator (yes, they get older) that has become something of a guardian to 1980s Sarah Connor. Check out the magazine cover below, via EmpireTerminator: Genisys opens in theaters on July 1st.
