Teaser Trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s THE STRAIN

In case you hadn’t had your fill of vampires yet, FX is currently gearing up for the television premiere of Guillermo del Toro’s new show, The Strain. Based on the novels by del Toro and Chuck Hogan, it follows the story of a CDC doctor and former professor as they try to stem the tide of a vampiric virus outbreak. The teaser doesn’t show us much, but it certainly sets the tone:

Personally, I think this sounds a lot like the awful World War Z, but with “vampires” instead of zombies. While I do find the more biological approach to vampirism interesting, the “outbreak” genre has worn a little thin for me. Opinions on the books are mixed, though the general consensus seems to be that the first book in The Strain Trilogy is very engaging, only to have the following books in the series fall apart plot wise. However, del Toro originally envisioned this story as a TV series, but couldn’t get any networks interested in it. Now that he’s able to tell the story in the medium it was meant for, perhaps that will translate into a better story overall, especially since there’s an actual end to the story (which is not the case with The Walking Dead).

The Strain stars Cory Stoll and David Bradley, and it will premiere on FX in July.
