Supernatural: Bloodlines

Fans of Supernatural have no doubt heard the rumors of a spin-off in the works, especially since it was teased almost a year ago. A couple days ago, the CW finally revealed that the spin-off, called Supernatural: Bloodlines, would get a back door pilot as episode 20 of the current season of Supernatural. The episode, also titled “Bloodlines,” will air next Tuesday, the 29th, and introduce the new series. Here’s the synopsis:

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a case in Chicago, where they discover that various mafia-esque monster families are, unknown to humans, running the underbelly of Chicago. One is a family of shapeshifters run by Margo Lassiter (guest stars Danielle Savre), whose leadership is thrown into question when her brother David (guest star Nathaniel Buzolic) returns home. The other reigning family in town is made up of werewolves, lead by Julian Duval (guest star Sean Faris). While in Chicago, Sam and Dean meet Ennis (guest star Lucien Laviscount), a man with a personal vendetta against the monsters. The Winchesters warn Ennis about heading into the hunter lifestyle, but Ennis refuses to listen and starts down a dangerous path.

Personally, I think what’s allowed Supernatural to last so long is the relationship between Sam and Dean. As annoying as their fraternal spats tend to be, they still have a deep bond that’s hard to duplicate. After all, how else could a show with essentially two characters manage to stay on TV for so long? Supernatural does have a revolving cast of series regulars, but even fan favorites like Crowley (Mark Sheppard) and Castille (Misha Collins) still seem like ancillary players three seasons later. Sam and Dean are truly the glue that holds the show together.

Supernatural: Bloodlines has an interesting premise, but it’ll fly or die based on the cast. While I haven’t watched Supernatural as a die-hard fan over the past nine years, I did watch the entire series in three weeks, so I have a pretty good sense of the show as a whole. It works because Padalecki and Ackles have great on-screen chemistry, and because the show doesn’t take itself too seriously (at least not all the time). Overall, though, the writing is pretty hit or miss, only saved by the earnestness of its brotherly duo. If the CW hasn’t gathered together a strong enough ensemble for Supernatural: Bloodlines, then I can’t imagine that this spin-off will really take off.

But let’s withhold judgement! Check out the trailer/promo below, as well as the photo gallery, and tell us your first impressions of Supernatural: Bloodlines.
