It’s been over twenty years since Father of the Bride, the 1991 remake of the 1950 film about a father dealing with the emotional and financial costs of paying for his daughter’s wedding.  I was a huge fan of the franchise and Justin and I quote Frank (pronounced Fronk) all the time. Now since everything 90s is now lurching its way back into theaters, there’s now word of Father of the Bride Part III with George Banks’ facing a new upper-middle class problem: his son’s gay marriage.

According to Nikki Finke, Charles Shyer would return to write and direct and Martin is on board to reprise the lead role.  The big twist this time around is that Matty Banks (played by Kiernan Culkin in the first two movies), now an adult, is gay and father-of-the-bride-steve-martin-478x600getting hitched to a Navy SEAL’s son.  George, who apparently did not enter the 21st century with the rest of us, is “thunderstruck and speechless” and unhappy with his son’s gay marriage, so Nina (played by Diane Keaton in the original) kicks George out of the house.  You can already see the second act turn where George learns to accept his son, and the constant mugging Martin will do throughout the movie if this ever comes together.  It could also be his first on-screen performance since 2011′s The Big Year (he lends his voice to “Captain Smek” in DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming film, Home).

Ironically, if they had attempted this plot back in the 1990s, it would have felt fresh and exciting.  Even though it’s a little cliché-ridden, 1997′s In & Out went for the gay marriage angle, and the movie was a modest hit.  Father of the Bride 3 looks like it will be a couple decades late for the ceremony. Also, as a side note, do gay men prefer to be called “brides” at their weddings?  Or should this movie be called “Father of the Groom” rather than Father of the Bride Part III?
