Haters can say whatever they want about the Star Wars prequels, but John Williams’ scores for those films were amazing. His work remains top-notch and I love “Duel of the Fates” and “Confrontation with Count Dooku” and hold “Across the Stars” as my favorite piece of Star Wars (if you haven’t heard it in a while, check it out again) music to date. He knew how to create a rousing Star Wars world that George Lucas forgot at times, and I hope that Williams’ has still got it when it comes to the Star Wars sequels, or at least, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is currently the only one he’s signed on to do.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, William said that the Star Wars: The Force Awakens score will make some references to earlier pieces, although he wouldn’t specify which ones:

There are some scenes where we do make reference to earlier thematic pieces. We haven’t done it yet, but we’re planning to do it. It’s something that I think will seem star-wars-the-force-awakens-teaser-poster1-405x600very natural and right in the moments for which we’ve chosen to do these kinds of quotes. There aren’t many of them, but there are a few that I think are important and will seem very much a part of the fabric of the piece in a positive and constructive way.

It’s good to know that these callbacks will be used sparingly, although I’m sure fans’ hearts will swell when they hear a particular piece used again. Will Williams and director J.J. Abrams bring back Han and Leia’s love theme? “The Hologram / Binary Sunset” was used in the latest trailer, so will that be making a comeback? Personally, I’m excited to hear riffs on old themes, assuming that’s how Williams chooses to go. Will the theme for “The First Order” be reminiscent of the Empire’s theme?

However Williams chooses to go, I’ll be excited to hear his latest installment in the Star Wars saga. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens December 18th. For more on the film, click here for all of our coverage.
