If Star Wars Episode VII is really going to start production in early 2014 to make it’s summer 2015 release date, then details will invariably begin to leak out. Disney was pretty mum during last weekend’s San Diego Comic Con, but all that should change this weekend at Star Wars Celebration in Germany or next month when Disney hosts their D23 Expo – the Ultimate Disney fan experience. The news that most people expect to hear is “Who is going to be in this thing?”

If rumors can be believed, we may have gotten a peek into the casting as Latino Review is reporting that Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron are being eyed to appear in the film. There has been no official word from Disney, Lucasfilm, or anyone else so take the above with a grain of salt. The same rumors have Gosling playing Luke Skywalker’s son, named Ben in the novels, but who knows how faithful the new films will be to the expanded universe. Remember that Episode VII takes place 30 years after Return of the Jedi so Gosling is the proper age to play the younger Skywalker. The report does not name Efron’s character and also indicates that Leonardo DiCaprio was involved at one point, but has since backed down.

Big name casting certainly flies in the face of Star Wars casting to date. In the past they have used relative unknowns with the rare exception of Samuel L. Jackson. It doesn’t feel like a Star Wars play, but who knows how Disney plans on running the show. Their philosophy may be that Star Wars (big money) plus big stars (big money) will equal super big Avengers money.

Remember nothing has been confirmed yet, so don’t kill the messenger yet. Hopefully in 96 hours we will know a lot more about this rumor and a hundred more that will appear in the next couple days. The last major rumor was that J.J. Abrams was thinking of backing out of the project, but Lucasfilm quickly squashed that rumor with an official statement. Star Wars: Episode VII is expected to be released sometime in 2015.
