Spike VGA 2012 Nominees and Predictions – Part 3

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 4:00 pm by Stephen Janes

So here we embark on part three of a lengthy process in predicting who will walk away victorious from the Spike VGA 2012 Nominees and predict who has the best chance of winning these prestigious awards. Taking place on December 7 and obviously airing on Spike Network, this award show will be the 10th anniversary of the VGA’s, the Academy Awards for gamers. You can expect to see various different installments in the next few days with different categories and predictions. In short, I will be picking a personal and a spoiler pick. The personal pick will be who I feel is the best candidate for the respective award, while the spoiler pick features the underdog with the best chance at winning.
With that being said, let’s take a look at the third and final bundle of categories, mostly pertaining to technical aspects such as music, graphics and characters and the like.

Best Song In Game

“Castle of Glass” by Linkin Park (Medal of Honor Warfighter)
“Cities” by Beck (Sound Shapes)
“I Was Born For This” by Austin Wintory (Journey) [personal pick]
“Tears” by Health (Max Payne) [spoiler pick]

I felt like this was a very easy choice to go with “I Was Born For This” by Austin Wintory. Beautifully composed and it served as a great way to end a spectacular title. I kept thinking to myself that this sounded like the ending to an epic war movie or a Lord of the Rings style saga and I think it should certainly win this category.

 Best Original Score

Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Halo 4
Journey [personal pick]
Max Payne 3 [spoiler pick]

I think the music in Journey made the adventure more memorable, which is why it should win for best score. The Max Payne franchise has been fantastic making you feel as if you are disturbed, and Max Payne 3 followed suit with an eerie yet powerful sound. I still think Journey should be a lock here, however. It helps that little Bastion beat out the likes of Batman: Arkham City, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Portal 2 last year, which bodes well for Journey.

Best Graphics

Assassin’s Creed III
Dishonored [personal pick]
Halo 4
Journey [spoiler pick]

Dishonored is one of the most beautiful games I have seen this generation. While the graphical style is much different from Journey, it still blew me away at how smooth and responsive everything seemed. Assassin’s Creed III looked beautiful as well, but Dishonored needs some recognition and here is a great place to do that.

Best Performance by Human Female

Emma Stone as Amanda Cartwright (Sleeping Dogs)
Jen Taylor as Cortana (Halo 4) [spoiler pick]
Jennifer Hale as Commander Shepard (Mass Effect 3)
Melissa Hutchison as Clementine (The Walking Dead) [personal pick]

I have never cared for a non-playable character (NPC) as much as I care for Clementine in The Walking Dead: The Game. The performance by Melissa Hutchinson accurately portrays Clementine as this vulnerable, innocent child who is oblivious to the death and mayhem happening around her. Also, she’s 37 playing a little kid. Totally did not see that coming. Bravo.

Best Performance by Human Male

Dameon Clarke as Handsome Jack (Borderlands 2) [personal pick]
Dave Fennoy as Lee Everret (The Walking Dead: The Game)
James McCaffrey as Max Payne (Max Payne 3)
Nolan North as Captain Martin Walker (Spec Ops: The Line) [spoiler pick]

Despite Nolan North voicing almost every video game character ever (a little exaggerated), I was most blown away by the performance of Dameon Clarke as Handsome Jack. He reminded me of GlaDos from Portal and Portal 2, just the way you are constantly discouraged and put down throughout your game made you angry and strive for the finish. Should be an easy pick here.

Best Adapted Video Game

Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two
Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes [spoiler pick]
The Walking Dead: The Game [personal pick]
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

As with Journey and the independent category, The Walking Dead: The Game should have an easy victory here.

Best DLC

Dawnguard – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim [personal pick]
Leviathan – Mass Effect 3
Mechromancer Pack – Borderlands 2 [spoiler pick]
Perpetual Testing Initiative – Portal 2

The Dawnguard was constantly talked about when it was announced and I know several fans who re-entered their Skyrim worlds just to play this new DLC. While the Mechromancer was a very interesting bit of content with a new playable character, Skyrim offered a whole new element to the game as well as new features and areas.

Best Downloadable Game

Fez
Journey [spoiler pick]
Sound Shapes
The Walking Dead: The Game [personal pick]

This really comes down to The Walking Dead and Journey. I think The Walking Dead was a more interesting experience, but Journey was too polished and beautiful to forget.

FAN VOTE: Most Anticipated Game

Bioshock Infinite [personal pick]
Grand Theft Auto V [spoiler pick]
South Park: The Stick of Truth
The Last of us
Tomb Raider

Even with all of the delays surrounding Bioshock Infinite, it still looks to be a fantastic title that nearly everybody is eagerly awaiting. This would have been an easy victory except with all of the trailers and buzz surrounding GTA V, it should be a close call between the two. This category is voted upon by the fans online at Spike’s website, so this could go anyway.

FAN VOTE: Character of the Year

Connor (Assassin’s Creed III)
Commander Shepard (Mass Effect 3) [personal pick]
Clap Trap (Borderlands 2) [spoiler pick]
Master Chief (Halo 4)
Raul Mendez (Call of Duty: Black Ops II)

I pick Commander Shepard because to me, Commander Shepard is the player. You are given the opportunity to customize your Shepard into whoever you want with whatever abilities you wanted, making Commander Shepard an extension of you. To me, that was more meaningful and that’s where my vote goes. Again, this is voted upon by the fans so this could go in any direction.

Alright Geeks, now that we are finally complete with our Spike VGA 2012 predictions, what do you all think? Did I hit the spot on most of these? Am I completely wrong? Sound off in the comments and let’s hear what you have to say about all of this. Be sure to check out the previous installments as well for the full list of nominees and predictions.
