spider-man-homecoming-slice1-600x200Sony Pictures has released the first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer, offering a first look at the Marvel and Sony co-production. The new film sees Peter Parker (Tom Holland) dealing with the regular growing pains that come with being a high-school student while also having to fend off supervillains.

While Andrew Garfield did a terrific job as Spider-Man, he was let down by the surrounding films that didn’t know how to handle the character. They were so focused on franchise building that they forgot to tell the story in front of them, and the Amazing Spider-Man movies will sadly go down as a monumental waste of talent for everyone involved.

That being said, it looks like fans have warmed to Holland as the new Spider-Man, especially now that we get to see Peter Parker in his teenage years. The Raimi and Webb Spider-Man movies both rushed spider-man-homecoming-logo-600x338through this part of Peter’s life, but director Jon Watts is making it the focus in his reboot. I’m really excited to see how this changes not only the tone of a Spider-Man movie, but really brings the character to life in a new way.

It will be interesting to see if this reboot pays off for Sony, who have struggled with the character ever since Spider-Man 3. Homecoming is also a bit of a gamble for Marvel, since they’ve been entrusted with trying to make the franchise a success where past attempts have failed. Thankfully, it looks like they have a clear idea of what they want.

Having seen the Homecoming footage Marvel brought to Comic-Con this year, I’m not in the slightest bit surprised by how delightful the new trailer is. It’s definitely a more action-packed batch of footage (the Hall H sizzle reel was more focused on the John Hughes-y high school feel), but it’s got all the charm and humor as well. And we finally get a look at Vulture, who seems pretty much straight up evil and terrifying.

Check out the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailers below. The film opens July 7, 2017, and also stars Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton, Bokeem Woodbine, Donald Glover, Hannibal Buress, Abraham Attah, Martin Starr, Tony Revolori, Michael Barbieri, and Angourie Rice.

Here’s the official Spider-Man: Homecoming synopsis:

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened. Directed by Jon Watts. Produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal. Screenplay by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley and Jon Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, Based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
