Special Edition Hobbit 3D Glasses? No Thanks!

So New Line/Warner Bros./MGM announced that there will be a set of special edition 3D glasses for the release of The Hobbit. I gotta say, they’re pretty hideous. Admittedly, I don’t like 3D, and I hate all 3D glasses in general, but these ones are pretty ridiculous. Take a look:

The marketing copy describes them as having “a uniquely designed folding arm frame and hammer forged steel look.” Frankly, they look like plastic 3D glasses that will be even more uncomfortable than the usual ones. Now, I love, love, love LOTR and all things J.R.R. Tolkien. I own a life-sized Legolas cardboard cut-out, I have all three extended editions of the movies, and the Gates of Argonath sit on my shelves keeping my books in place. However, I am not wearing this monstrosity, especially since I wear glasses all day every day anyway, and these are just going to clash with my usual look. But I digress.

With this coming on the heels of the announcement of a third Hobbit movie, I’m starting to wonder how much crazier the Hobbit Hype is going to get in the months ramping up to the first movie. I’m not even sure why they’re trying so hard; these movies already have a built-in fan base from those of us who geeked out like crazy ten years ago over the first adaptation. I suppose they have to make their money, though, and what better way to do so than to have as many weird and vaguely-related-to-the-movie collector’s items such as this?

So what do you guys think? Are you going to give in to merchandising and grab a pair of these Hobbit 3D glasses for that midnight showing? Do you think that they’ll enhance your viewing experience? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!

    • It looks like you'd be wearing a wrought-iron fence on your face! Ouch!

Those are NOT good looking. Like the antithesis of Legolas.

    • I already pre-ordered a whole case of them. I can't wait to sport these bad boys when The Great Gatsby 3D experience is released.
