There are some comic characters that come across as far more interesting when they’re in team books as opposed to their own solo title. I hear this criticism leveled at characters like Captain America and Wolverine all the time; there are people who love those characters, but would never drop a penny on an issue of their own titles.
To me, this was the case with Carol Danvers, the current Captain Marvel. I’m a big fan of her sassing and kick-assing in books like Avengers, but her previous solo title lost me after a few issues. Not being a die-hard fan, there was little there for me, and I quickly stopped reading it.
I say all this because I think this new Captain Marvel title might just change my mind. Judging from the preview, gone is the heavy focus on Carol’s “isn’t this Hal Jordan’s story” origin, replaced instead with what actually makes Carol great: her attitude. Carol defines the current standard of strong female characters in comics, and casual fans like myself want a solo book that reminds us exactly why that’s true, and it looks like we’re going to get it.
Take a look at the preview below and see if you agree. We already know Kelly Sue DeConnick can write a mean Carol Danvers, and from the looks of it, David Lopez’s pencils are on the same level. We’ll all find out for sure when the book debuts on March 12th!
