Everyone’s favorite webslinger may be appearing in a Marvel movie after all.  Since the disappointment of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony Pictures has been mulling over what to do with its sole comic book property.  One option was to possibly share the character with Marvel Studios, co-producing a new reboot and allowing him to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Reports surfaced that talks between Sony and Marvel did take place last year, but ultimately broke down with Sony opting to go it alone.  But if a new report is to be believed, the two came back to the table and have hammered out a deal that will see Spidey popping up in Marvel’s upcoming Phase Three.

In a very spoilery report on all things Marvel, the folks over at Latino Review are saying that the Sony deal with Marvel went the-amazing-spider-man-2-andrew-garfield-megaphonethrough, and the character is set to make his MCU debut in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War Part I.  Now, obviously, this is to be taken as rumor for now, as the particulars involved in this sort of deal are no doubt incredibly complicated—there’s a lot of money at stake and this is Sony’s only superhero play.

But we did recently learn that Marvel really wanted the Spider-Man deal to go through so they could use the character in Captain America: Civil War, so if the deal did happen, it makes sense that they’d want to use him in one of their major Phase Three films.  Rumors are swirling that the lineup for The Avengers is going to be very different in the two-part Infinity War saga (Latino Review has more details on that, but be warned, they are incredibly spoilery), and if that’s true then Spidey’s introduction fills a hole left by some of the original members.

The report claims that the character will be recast, meaning Andrew Garfield is no longer Spider-Man.  If so, that’s a damn shame.  The guy did an incredible job inhabiting the character in Sony’s films despite some truly terrible scripts, and I’d love to see him continue on under the creative direction of the folks at Marvel.  But I understand their hesitance to use the same actor—some audience members may be confused as to whether the Amazing films are canon in this new Marvel universe, and Marvel no doubt wants a clean slate.

Again, this is all conjecture for now, but it’s an interesting prospect nonetheless.  Marvel is incredibly powerful so I have no doubt they’ve been working hard to bring Spider-Man into the fold.  Hopefully we hear some official word on the future of Spider-Man soon.

Update: Sony has denied the rumor via Comic Book Resources.  Who knows though, maybe this is smoke and mirrors before a bid announcement… possibly at Comic-Con.
