To say that “Good things come to those who wait” is a bit of an understatement this week; Sandman Overture is back! After a five month break, the characters made famous by Neil Gaiman are back in the second issue of the phenomenal prequel series, and it was a worth the wait.

In comparison to the series’ incredible first issue, very little actually happens in Sandman Overture #2. The book opens to Daniel as he ventures out to visit the centuries old Mad Hettie – a character that fans of the original Sandman series will remember. The Dream of a Thousand Cats is back as well, but so is each and every one of the different personifications of Dream. A meeting of several of himself, Dream learns that all is not what it appears to be – And soon, things may be getting very dangerous for all beings, the Endless included.
As biased as I may be towards the genius of Neil Gaiman’s writing, his talent and skill is undeniable. If introducing dozens of different aspects of Dream, wasn’t enough, Gaiman cleverly has the character (er, characters?) argue amongst themselves over proper pronoun usage. The Universe of the Endless continues to grow in detail, and though not much happened plot wise in Sandman Overture #2, I have a feeling these first two issues lay the building blocks to what is going to be an intense ride for the rest of the series.
J.H. Williams III is one of the Endless as an artist, as far as I’m concerned. Each and every page of Sandman Overture #2 (as well as anything I’ve EVER seen Williams do) is pure magic. Each personification of Dream magically melts into another as the story delves deeper and deeper into the meeting of all Dreams. Blending perfectly with William’s fantastical pencils and inks are the coloring skills of Dave Stewart, truly turning Sandman Overture #2 into the visual masterpiece that it is. But the artist truly to be commended for this issue is lettering genius Todd Klein. One glance at the many different styles and techniques of typography used in Sandman Overture #2 proves Klein’s keen eye on the subject.
Things are beginning to get serious for the Endless in Standman Overture #2, but I have a feeling it’s about to get much bigger than the Endless. If the stellar creative team listed in the credits above wasn’t amazing enough, this prequel series definitely surpasses all expectations! Already these books have become ones that readers will want to read again and again and again…And so they should!
