Really Hollywood? GRUMPY CAT: THE MOVIE

As a life-long dog person who has never owned a cat I can safely say that I do not get the Grumpy Cat.  The pictures of “Tard,” a snowshoe cat with a naturally angry face has dominated sites like Facebook and Reddit since it’s debut in September 2012, when a meme was born.  After eight months of internet dominance, Todd Garner (Jack and Jill) is spearheading the effort to develop a movie around Grumpy Cat:

“This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy.  You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next.  We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”

Grumpy Cat will reportedly speak in the “Garfield-like” feature.

My instinct is to be dismissive, but Garner makes a valid point.  That cat is ingrained into the public’s imagination—there is a legitimate character to build a story around.  But then you realize that Garner’s last three movies are Here Comes the Boom, Jack and Jill, and Zookeeper, and you minimize your expectations.

According to Deadline, Garner will produce with his Broken Road partner Sean Robins and Grumpy Cat’s representatives (you heard me!) Ben Lashes and Al Hassas.
