PS4 Console Sales Hit 10 Million, Sony Annouces at Gamescom

Posted on August 13, 2014 at 11:09 am by Amanda Andonian

During their Gamescom presentation in Germany yesterday, Sony announced that the PS4 has sold over 10 million copies in the nine months since its launch, making it the console leader ahead of the Xbox One and Wii U.

No doubt this is bad news for Microsoft, whose Xbox One has only sold a third of that since launch, Deadline reported. Microsoft is clearly banking on the Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusive to bolster their console sales, but can they really catch up with the PS4’s numbers? The company has already had to make a number of changes in order to compete with Sony. Initially, you had to purchase an Xbox One bundled with the Kinect, but the higher price point made the PS4 a better deal at face value; but then Microsoft started offering an Xbox One-only version that matched the PS4’s $399 price tag.

I don’t really have a horse in this race since I won’t be purchasing a new console for many years to come, and I doubt that the success of the Xbox One will flag to the point where it’s truly bad news for Microsoft. Granted they had high ambitions for their newest console, but the game industry is such that there’s still plenty of room for Sony, Microsoft, and even Nintendo. Moreover, consoles exclusives aren’t as prevalent anymore as they were when I was a kid, so gamers everywhere can all pretty much play the same games as each other. And even if you don’t have the right console, chances are you know someone who does who’s friend enough to share the wealth.

In any case, I’m inclined to see this as good news for everyone. More console sales mean more and better games, and that’s really what we all want, right?
