A Realm Awoken

Square Enix announced today that Final Fantasy XIV will have its first major content update on December 17, with patch 2.1 – A Realm Awoken. The MMO was released at the tail end of the summer and although plagued with many issues, the game has been met with considerable success. If for some reason you have stopped playing FFXIV, you might want to revisit Eorzea after patch 2.1 is released.

Main Scenario:

Five years past, the realm was brought to the brink of destruction by the elder primal Bahamut. Seething with rage from aeons of imprisonment, he unleashed his unbridled fury across the length and breadth of Eorzea, the devastation wrought by his rampage marking the end of the Sixth Astral Era.

Slowly yet surely, Eorzea’s wounds began to heal, and her people enjoyed a rare moment of respite.

Before long, however, the Garlean Empire stirred, reaching to cast its shadow over the realm. To stay the encroaching darkness, the order known as the Scions of the Seventh Dawn called upon the aid of those brave adventurers who would lend their blades. Their combined efforts did quell the Garlean threat, earning accolades from leaders of nations and commonfolk alike.

Yet where there is light, there will always be darkness. The beast tribes persist in their efforts to summon the primals—aetherial entities whose powers swell with the amassed crystals and fervent prayers of their followers. The once-defeated Garlean forces resurface, harboring renewed ambitions of conquest. And the baleful Ascians lurk in the shadows, their presence rousing dark forces long since forgotten.

As new threats emerges, adventurers must once again heed the Crystal’s call.

New Dungeon – The Crystal Tower is a 25 man dungeon where players must first navigate through the Labyrinth of the Ancients, a dangerous maze that leads to the tower’s entrance. You better believe it’s filled with monsters to boot.

Character Housing – Players may purchase a plot of land in residential districts and build a marvelous home to share with members of their free company. You’ll notice in the video, players can customize the roof, exterior walls, windows, and doors. Furthermore, players will take on the role of interior decorator by changing the wallpaper, lights, and furnishings. There’s no place like home…

PVP – The Wolves’ Den will be available for those of you adventures that wish to take on other players in PVP action.

Duty Roulette –  Players will enter instanced dungeons, trials, and guildhests at random. The players that elect to randomize Duty Roulette will receive enhanced rewards such as experience points, company seals, gil, etc.

Check out the video to see other new features headed your way. For more details be sure to check out the patch notes found on Final Fantasy XIV’s official page. Let us know if you’re still hooked on the MMO or if patch 2.1 has enough pull to renew your subscription.
