Assassin's Creed Syndicate

PAX Prime 2015 has come and gone and with it were 100’s of games for us to get our geeky hands on including Assassin’s Creed Syndicate from Ubisoft. Now I’m sure a lot of you are thinking “another Assassin’s Creed game? Really?!?!” But let me just say I spent upwards of 20 minutes playing a stealth mission and had an absolute blast sneaking from rooftop to rooftop taking down unsuspecting foes.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is set in London during the Industrial Revolution where the rich get richer while the working class struggles to survive. Sound familiar? Well it should and now is your chance to take up arms and fight back! Enter Jacob and Evie Frye, twins leading the charge in the world’s first organized crime family.

In the demo I took on the role of Evie Frye for what is described as a “black box” mission. Here the player chooses their own path for achieving the mission goal. I arrived at the Tower of London in search of the Shroud, an ancient artifact created by the first civilization. It just so happens a Templar named Lucy Thorne also believes the Shroud might be located in the Tower of London and has gone out of her way to complicate things for me. The game is afoot!

So as I mentioned before with Black Box missions the player gets to choose which route best suits their play-style. The moment I reached a checkpoint the game setup three scenarios for me to choose from to gain entry into the Tower of London and take out Lucy Thorne. I could steal the keys from a Captain, enter the tower from the roof and drop down on Lucy–stabbing her until she were dead, dead, dead. Option two would be saving the Constable who is being detained by the Templars. Freeing him would help rally the troops into taking back the Tower from the Templars and causing quite a ruckus. Finally, the third option and the one I opted for was partnering with an allied guard that would pretend to arrest Evie and walk her right up to Lucy Thorne… Easy peasy, Templar squeezy.

Mastering Evie’s mechanics was a total cake walk and quite honestly felt like the most fluid controls in Assassin’s Creed history. The free climbing and rope launcher allowed for me to infiltrate with the greatest of ease. It’s worth mentioning that Evie is a master of stealth and features a unique chameleon ability. If she remains still while in stealth mode she will become nearly invisible to enemies, even on open ground. That’s pretty freakin’ sweet!

We weren’t given the opportunity to experience the new driving mechanic or witness mobs clashing in an all out brawl, a la Gangs of New York. However, this hands-on demo drove its hooks into me and I eagerly await its release this Fall.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will be available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 23, 2015.
