NYCC 2013 – Amazing X-Men & The Marvel Universe Panel

Posted on October 11, 2013 at 7:56 pm by Joe Blakeslee

The X-Men are one of Marvel’s biggest properties, rivaled only by The Avengers in shear book count. So it’s no surprise that Marvel came strong at the Amazing X-Men & The Marvel Universe panel at NYCC. Featuring a panel made up of Marvel editors Nick Lowe, Jeanine Schaefer, Daniel Ketchum and Jordan D. White. As well as writers Peter David, Gerry Dugan, Marjorie Liu, Dennis Hopeless, Charles Soule, Simon Spurrier and Brian Wood.

After a brief talk about the currently ongoing Battle of the Atom storyline, they jumped right into the thick of it to tackle the upcoming book that was essentially the titular book of the panel Amazing X-Men!

X-Men don’t stay dead. It’s just a fact of comic book life. So when you’re bringing back one of the most beloved members of the X-Men, Jason Aaron and Ed McGuiness have decided to go all out and base an entire series around it.

Amazing X-Men is a new series dedicated (at least at first) to the search for everyones favorite swashbuckling blue elf Nightcrawler! Wolverine will lead a team of X-Men through Heaven and Hell in order to locate their long lost ally.

Next up was info on the next upcoming story arc of X-Men.  Current writer Wood will be joined by Terry and Rachel Dodson will pit the team against recurring villain Lady Deathstrike, while also bringing back former ‘Generation X’ member Monet to add to the team.

Going back to Battle of the Atom, the panel went into two comics that would be heavily affected by the outcome of the event, Wolverine & The X-Men and All New X-Men. Teaser images of Wolverine slashing through a S.H.I.E.L.D. logo and teaming up with his current rival Cyclops to take out some Sentinels. We were also informed that Wolverine clone X-23  would be joining the All New X-Men team.

The upcoming Uncanny X-Men story arc will have a heavy focus on Emma Frost and face stealing new mutant Benjamin Deeds. There will also be a special Inhumanity tie-in issue with #15.INH Lowe promised that the new issue would introduce a new character that would “see fans throwing things at Brian Michael Bendis.”

Phil Jimenez will be taking over Savage Wolverine for the next story arc sending him to Madripoor. And in plain old Wolverine the current running ‘Killable’ story will be coming to a close and Schaefer promised us a surprise ending that we wont see coming.

Spurrier then talked about X-Men Legacy and how happy he was with the response from fans of the book and on his feelings for the character Legion and hi work on the series. He also teased us by saying that he had had another announcement to make, “but circumstances has conspired against us.”

Deadpool was the next topic as Duggan talked about his work with comedian Brian Posehn and where they plan to take the ‘Merc With a Mouth’ over the course of the next few issues. They also talked about the upcoming Deadpool Annual #1 from Ben’s Acker and Blacker with art from Evan Shaner that will finally answer the question “What happened to Deadpool’s white caption boxes?'”

The two X-Forces, both Cable and Uncanny will have a four issue crossover called ‘Vendetta’ which will have the teams going up against Cable’s evil clone Stryfe.

Fans of Christopher Hastings webcomic Doctor McNinja will want to keep an eye out for his upcoming Longshot centered comic Longshot Saves the Marvel Universe.

Liu and Schaefer then talked about their work on the recently wrapped up Astonishing X-Men and how much of an honor it was for them to work on the book.

At this point the panel switched focus to the upcoming ‘All New Marvel NOW!’ books. Starting with Soule’s upcoming She-Hulk. They then started to break down the teaser images that have been released over the last week in preparation for NYCC.

Sinners” was a teaser for the upcoming run of Thunderbolts that will see Ghost Rider joining the team in a storyline called ‘No Mercy.’ Considering Ghost Rider’s past history with current Thunderbolt member Venom and how he was responsible for Flash Thompson being bonded with a demon, it’ll be interesting to see how the team dynamic will work out.

The “Trial” and “Judgment” teasers were for The Trial of Jean Grey. the crossover event will be having the All New X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy teaming up to save the young Jean Grey who is blamed for the damage caused by the Phoenix Force during the events of A vs. X.

Corporate” will be the upcoming All New X-Factor. The premise of which would be akin to “What would happen if a major corporation (think Google) formed their own super team?” Serval Incorporated will put together a team made up of Polaris, Gambit, Quicksilver and two other unnamed members.

It was at this point that they opened the floor to questions from the audience, and the Amazing X-Men & The Marvel Universe panel came to an end.
