POWERS, PlayStation’s edgy new dramatic series from Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind the critically-acclaimed Breaking Bad, treated thousands of fans at New York Comic Con to the first footage from the highly-anticipated project.

Powers is here and its being delivered from someone you might not expect. The new television series based on the graphic novel by the same name Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, is being produced by Sony Pictures Television. Sony is using Powers to launch its own original programming on the Playstation Network later in the year. FX originally ordered a pilot for Powers in 2011 but the project was scrapped shortly after. Bendis credits fans of the graphic novel and their voice across the internet for Sony coming to him to acquire Powers.

Originally published by Image Comics in 2000 before moving to Marvel’s Icon imprint in 2004, Powers “combines the genres of superhero fantasy, crime noir and the police procedural. Powers follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley) and Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward), who are assigned to investigate cases involving people with extraordinary abilities, referred to as “Powers.”

According to Bendis, Powers will not follow the graphic novel word-for-word, as he feels that adaptations of that sort rarely work well. Instead, the series will focus on the difference between “normal” humans and “powers” in mordern day Chicago.

On a panel at New York Comic Con, an exclusive trailer for Powers was revealed. TRAILER CONTAINS MATURE LANGUAGE.

Production is currently under way in Atlanta on the third episode, and Powers will premiere on PlayStation Network in December. The pilot will be free for everyone, and PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to watch the entire first season for free.
