Nintendo Amiibo Figures for Wii U and 3DS

Posted on June 10, 2014 at 11:09 am by Justin Cavender

Nintendo has introduced new interactive figures for games called Amiibo. These little guys use NFC tech (near field communication) to work with video games. Simply place an amiibo figure on your Wii U GamePad and watch the magic unfold.

It looks like Nintendo will launch about 10 amiibo figures this holiday season to work with Super Smash Bros. Eventually, the figures will support other titles including Mario Kart 8 Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi’s Woolly World, with more games to follow.

“Nintendo has always represented a unique source of video game entertainment for the widest range of gamers,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president and chief operating officer. “We create timeless games with twists and turns that provide hours of enjoyment for fans of all ages, and this year with the introduction of amiibo, we’re pushing the creative envelope forward in compelling new ways.”

On several episodes of the Pixelated Podcast, both Stephen and I thought of cool ways for Nintendo to make a little extra money. We thought it would be a great idea to sell these figures loaded with DLC for games. This way, players will have something tangible to go with their digital content. We geeks like to collect things and you better believe Nintendo fans will be all over amiibo figures.
