New Robocop film gets a release date

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 9:50 am by David "Snackbar" Edmundson

The José Padilha directed Robocop remake was given a UK release date of August 9th 2013.  Studiocanal also released a brief blurb about the film;

“In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.”

Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, Darkest Hour) is set to play the titular character.  The film also stars Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Hugh Laurie.  Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch) is slated to play Ellen Murphy, the wife of Alex Murphy who becomes RoboCop after he is brutally assaulted.

The 1987 original is an ultra-violent classic, and the remake seems to be following the same basic formula.  Robocop was followed by two less popular sequels in 1990 and 1993, and a Sci-Fi original mini-series in 2000.  Popular comic book writer Frank Miller (Sin City, 300) wrote the screenplay for both sequels.

What do you think?  Are you excited for a Robo-reboot?

    • I love Robocop. Heck, I even used to watch the animated series when I was a kid, so I'm game for a reboot. Hopefully we'll have a whole slew of new quotable one-liners from the movie! And maybe even some classics like: "I'll buy that for a dollar!" or "Your move, creep!"

      What moron thought it would be a good to remake Robocop. While we're at it why remake Total Recall? Hollywood, get some new fresh ideas instead of taking a movie that's barely over 20 years old and remaking it. Whats the next remake? Could it be Demolition Man, Ferris Buellers day off, or how about the Breakfast Club??? In the words of Cee Lo Green "F U!!!"

      Paul Verhoevan directed both Robocop and Total Recall. People like those movies, and want to share them with a new generation. They should find a way to make it their own though. Maybe call them Robot Policeman or Complete Recall. Yeah, billion dollar idea I tell you what. You guys can have that for free.

    • Don't worry Goalie, I am sure there will be a remake of Ferris and Brekfast Club. Sad sad state, but I guess that's why it's show business and not show original idea.
