New Nintendo Console Announced

Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata announced that the company is currently working on a new console titled, “NX.” The only concrete details revealed were that NX would include new hardware and fresh gaming concepts

While the major announcement was the news of Nintendo teaming up with DeNA, it’s very surprising and noteworthy that Iwata broke the news of a new dedicated game system so early. The Wii U is just over the two year mark and has recently been gaining steam in the sales department. However, the demand for the Wii U has not been as high as it’s predecessor the Wii.

The NX might not be an entirely new console, however. Nintendo listed the NX hardware next to the 3DS and the Wii U console in a chart showcased at their recent press conference. This suggests the NX might be a supplement to the current consoles and handhelds or even an upgraded version of what currently exists. This was also used to help describe the new membership model Nintendo and DeNA are developing.

Iwata did confirm that no other announcements or updates would be provided on the NX until next year, so it will not be making any appearances at E3 or the next Nintendo Direct. Iwata danced around the notion that the Wii U wasn’t doing well and made it sound as though it would not be abandoned.

How shocking is this news announcement to you all? Were you expecting (at the least) talks of a new Nintendo console this soon? Is the Wii U really as bad as everybody says it is?
