Warner Bros. has released two new images from Doug Liman‘s upcoming sci-fi action flick, Edge of Tomorrow.  The film stars Tom Cruise as a military officer who is killed within minutes of a doomed combat mission to take down a hive-like alien race; he then wakes up and is forced to relive the day over and over again, but it allows him to become a better soldier and perhaps change his fate.  It’s basically Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day. Tomorrow we’ll get the trailer, but for now USA Today (which debuted the images) focuses on the exosuits.  The suits weighed about 85 pounds, and at one point Cruise had to sprint with a suit that weighed in at 130 because it had a sniper rifle and a missile launcher.  Cruise said it was “physically grueling” , but I am sure the magic of Scientology aided him in his time of need.

The film also stars Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, and Jeremy Piven.  Edge of Tomorrow opens June 6, 2014.

Here’s the official synopsis for Edge of Tomorrow:

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
