New From Syfy It’s Sharktopus vs. Mermantula! No…Really…

Twitter has successfully begun the end of world as we know it by making Sharknado the hit of the summer. So naturally Asylum is fast at work making even more Roger Corman-esque monster movies. Which brings me to the newest gem, Sharktopus vs. Mermantula!

Official Plot (and I’m using that word lightly):

In order to take down Sharktopus, Ray Brady, a former basketball player is injected with a transformation serum that alters his genetic make-up to become part man, part piranha and part tarantula. Though, unsuccessful at his first attempt to bring down Sharktopus, Ray injects himself with a growth hormone, increasing his strength ten fold and has a final showdown with Sharktopus in a baseball stadium.

Sharktopus

What does this say about current popular culture exactly? Well, a few things I guess. First, social media is truly an evil thing and should not have been given to us so freely (but please don’t take it away I need it like air!)

Secondly, there is still a love for cheesy monster movies from days of yore and thanks to affordable technology anyone can create them. Personally, I think these movies are hilarious and a great homage to Roger Corman and other directors of the same brand. I don’t think these movies are “ruining” anything, they are fun and very self-aware. As long as they continue to not take themselves too seriously I welcome them with open arms.

That being said, I’m so excited to see what a Mermantula looks like! And where does “piranha” fit into that name?? What do you guys think? Harmless fun or ruining cinema as we know it? Leave a comment below!
