20th Century Fox has released a new Fantastic Four poster for director Josh Trank’s (Chronicle) upcoming adaptation of the Marvel comic. What’s been clear from the very first teaser trailer is that Fox wants audiences to know that this new Fantastic Four is nothing like the previous two adaptations of the franchise. Whereas those were colorful and a bit more comic book-y in nature (the 2005 Fantastic Four came out the same year as Batman Begins, which would introduce the “gritty reboot” to the genre), Trank’s take is much more grounded, dark, and ominous. Indeed, Trank himself has stated that the body horror films of David Cronenberg were a big influence on his vision for Fantastic Four, and that’s certainly clear in this new poster.

The one-sheet gives us another look at the “team” image from the end of the film’s trailer, but this Fantastic Four poster features full CG effects, further illuminating the powers of the individual members. Jamie Bell’s The Thing is a giant rock, Michael B. Jordan’s Human Torch has a pair of hot hands, Kate Mara’s Invisible Girl is turning transparent, and Miles Teller’s Mr. Fantastic is stretchy—though his power is the least clear in this poster, presumably because showing a dude with unnaturally long limbs would be a bit off-putting to casual moviegoers.

And for further proof that Trank’s film is a departure from the previous films/source material, the origin of the group’s powers has been changed: they are now physically altered after an inter-dimensional mission goes wrong.

The film’s trailer also gave off a strong X-Men vibe, and Fox is very much playing up the similarities here with “From the Studio That Brought You X-Men: Days of Future Past” sitting nicely above the film’s title. Is that a harbinger of things to come re: a crossover film? We’ve still got to see how audiences respond to this film first, but I’d wager that’s a strong possibility.

Anyway, check out the new Fantastic Four poster below via the film’s Twitter. The film also stars Toby Kebbell, Tim Blake Nelson, and Reg E. Cathey. Fantastic Four opens in theaters on August 7th.
