New Details Emerge from Marvel’s Infinity

In a Q&A session with fans yesterday, Marvel shined some light on their upcoming event Infinity, and the details are appropriately epic. Here’s a breakdown of the highlights from writer Jonathan Hickman and Marvel editors Tom Brevoort and Axel Alonso.

– The main Infinity title will take place across six issues, with one in August, two in September and October, and the final in November.

– Unlike the minimal tie-ins we’re seeing with Age of UltronInfinity will have many more, similar to events like Fear Itself or Secret Invasion. The main tie-ins will take place across Avengers and New Avengers, but several other books will also overlap, including Scarlet Spider, Thunderbolts, Wolverine and the X-Men, and Captain Marvel.

– The Avengers tie-ins will take place across issues 18-23, and will be drawn by Leinil Yu (Incredible Hulk.) The New Avengers tie-ins will take place across issues 9-12, and will focus on the Illuminati’s battle on Earth, where Avengers will focus on that team’s fight in space.

– The alien race that is tearing a path of destruction is the Builders, the same race that’s been heavily discussed in the early issues of the current Avengers title. That same path will also involve all of the classic races of the Marvel Universe; specifically mentioned were the Skrulls, Kree, Shi’ar, Brood, the second Annihilation Wave, and the Spartax. In other words, if you have an alien race you like in the Marvel U, there’s a really good chance you’ll see them involved.

– Along with the threat of the Builders is obviously the additional threat of Thanos, but this time he isn’t alone. It was revealed he will be commanding a group of five new characters known as the Cull Obsidian, his team of enforcers that Marvel promises will each be fully developed and fleshed out throughout the event.

I’m baaaaack…

– On the side of the angels, Marvel promises this event will involve nearly every hero in the Marvel U, in a direct attempt to both shine a spotlight on characters that don’t normally get it as well as emphasize that the “universe” half of “Marvel Universe” isn’t just rhetoric. Expect to see every Avengers variation, the Illuminati, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and a particular emphasis on Black Bolt and his Inhumans.

– Perhaps the most shocking detail was that Infinity is actually just a portion of a larger plan by Hickman, who’s known for incredibly elaborate (and excellent) storylines. Infinity was described as “massive” but also as ” the end of Act 1″ of Hickman’s even broader two-year plan for the Marvel Universe.

From the sounds of it, Infinity is shaping up to be one of the most elaborate and meticulously planned major events we’ve seen in the Marvel Universe, a nice change of pace from the usual “let’s use a ton of people and probably kill at least one of them” mentality that tends to accompany these events. I was excited for Infinity before, but now I’m counting down the days until this gets started. What do you think? Is Infinity truly the “next big thing,” or is this just another summer event? Let us know in the comments!
