Netflix’s DAREDEVIL Will Have a Gritty ’70s-style New York Vibe; Adds Peter Shinkoda to the Cast

Despite Drew Goddard choosing to step down as showrunner and just serve as a consultant and executive producer back in May, prep work on Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix show hasn’t slowed down at all.  The show continued barreling towards its summer 2014 start, picking up Charlie Cox for the role of Matt Murdock, Vincent D’Onofrio as The Kingpin, Rosario Dawson as an unknown “absolutely critical” character, Deborah Ann Woll as our hero’s love interest, Karen Page, Elden Henson as Murdock’s best friend, Foggy Nelson, and, most recently, Falling Skies‘ Peter Shinkoda as an original character named Hachiro.

On top of that, we’ve got more world and tone details coming in.  We know the plan is for the show to take place on street level and explore the noir side of the Marvel Universe in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, but according to executive producer and new peter-shinkoda-falling-skies-450x600showrunner Steven S. DeKnight, it’ll be a gritty, ‘70s-style New York.

While talking with Marvel Entertainment at the Guardians of the Galaxy premiere, DeKnight offered this update:

“We have started shooting in New York.  It’s going phenomenally well.  I was just at Disney in a top secret Marvel location today seeing something extremely cool that I can’t talk about.  You know Marvel, they’ll murder me in my sleep if I say anything.”

Regardless, DeKnight still spilled some details on the tone and look of the show:

“We’re going for a very kind of gritty, 1970s New York feel for the show.  We love the idea of beauty and the decay in the city, and Hell’s Kitchen being a place that is both horrible and beautiful at the same time, and that’s why Matt Murdoch loves it so much and wants to protect it.”

As for Shinkoda’s casting, that information comes from Deadline.  The outlet doesn’t offer any details on his character, but does note that it’s a “major recurring role.”  Daredevil is expected to premiere in 2015 with 13 episodes.
