Netflix to Air New Episodes of BETWEEN a Week at a Time

Netflix is changing up the very bones of its business model, but it could portend some really good things for the future. The streaming giant is releasing new episodes of the upcoming Canadian survivalist drama Between one week at a time, flying in the face of all we know and hold dear regarding Netflix. The reason for the switch, though, is because Canada’s City network has the first worldwide rights to broadcast.

According to THR, what this will look like is that City will air Between in Canada at 8 p.m. (starting May 21st), and Netflix will then make the episode available at 9 p.m. that same night for the rest of the world.

Netflix isn’t planning on changing up any of its other series — Orange is the New Black, will still be dropped in full for all of its binge-watching glory on June 12th — but could this move open the possibility to some day get U.K. TV series the same night, or the day after, they air in Britain, this seems like a viable first step towards that reality.

It will be interesting to see whether or not viewers respond to the weekly content, or if subscribers will just hold off and wait to watch once all six episodes have been added. Of course, we’ll probably never know for sure since Netflix doesn’t release any viewing data … but we can glean it from whether or not they do it again.

As for Between, the 6-episode series (Netflix’s first Canadian original) stars Jennette McCurdy (Sam & Cat) as a pregnant teen in a town where a mysterious disease has killed off everyone over the age of 21.
