MISTS OF PANDARIA midnight release

Blizzard held a midnight release event in Irvine California to celebrate the release of the latest Word of Warcraft expansion.  Mists of Pandaria is the fourth expansion for their hugely popular MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game).  Hundreds of rabid fans decended on the Irvine Spectrum to be the first to get their hands on the game, as well as to commune with fellow fans.

Upon entering the event you were given a light up bracelet to denote you as Horde (red) or Alliance (blue).  Good thing that Irvine is a non-combat zone because at this event the Alliance appeared to outnumber us Hordies by a large number.  There were many cos-players dressed as their favorite characters or in some cases people dressed up like their in-game avatars (check out the gallery below.)  The event kicked off at 7:00 PM and the game developers were on hand well after midnight talking to the fans and signing their copy of Mists of Pandaria.

We were fortunate enough to sit down and talk to Rob Foote, one of the senior game designers on the expansion.  We’ll post the video soon, but Blizzard is definitely highlighting the Alliance/Horde war in this expansion.  When asked why this expansion was the first one without a clear-cut end game villain, he told us that the focus was going to be on conquest of the new area.  They wanted to create a land rush, and force the two opposing sides to battle for it.  They are bringing the “war” back to Warcraft.  We also talked about updating old character models, why people favor past expansions, and what seperates this expansion from the previous ones.

I had been to previous launches, and this one had a little smaller crowd, but I chalk that up to most people digitally downloading the game so they could play at midnight.  Blizzard really made it easy to do that by allowing you to download the majority of the game content and acquiring the lisence for that game well ahead of time.

Are you playing?  What is your favorite expansion so far?
