Merry Christmas to Mojang, who were very thankful for their gift of giving. Across all available platforms (Xbox 360, PC, Android and iOS), Minecraft sold well over 453,000 copies this Christmas. This information comes from Markus “Notch” Persson, the designer and head of Mojang.

That’s a lot of Creepers…

Notch was apparently just as surprised by this news. On his twitter account (@notch), the man with the sick fedora stated (sic), “Across all platforms, Minecraft sold 453k copies on dec 24! Wowzers! <3.” He later made the correction that these numbers represent Christmas Day rather than Christmas Eve as he originally suggested. Either way, those are impressive numbers for a game that was considered an indie release.

With this new information, Minecraft should be coming close or already surpassed 18 million units across all platforms. That is mightily impressive considering the game barely celebrated its first anniversary back in November (at least for PC). I admit that I have spent my fair share of hours in Minecraft both on the PC and the Xbox 360 and take it from me, this game is addicting. The gameplay is simple but it has enough complexion to it in order to stay fresh and interesting.

My fellow Geeks, are you one of the 453,000 people who purchased Minecraft on Christmas? Unfortunately these numbers do not break down how many units went to each platform, but if I had to guess I would say the Xbox 360 played a huge part in this. I know I just reacquainted myself with the Microsoft console in November and buying Minecraft was one of the first things I did.
