Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Will Bring PROJECT GREENLIGHT Back to HBO

Project Greenlight is making it’s triumphant return.  In the midst of the reality TV boom of the late 1990s/early 2000s, HBO got in on the fun with a filmmaker-centric reality show called Project Greenlight.  The show offered an inside look at the filmmaking process, as a contest chose a director and writer to bring an original feature film to fruition.  The brainchild of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, the series ran from 2001-2003 on HBO and then for a third season on Bravo in 2005.  After nearly a decade off the air, though, HBO, Affleck, and Damon are reviving the series for a new season.

Per THR, Affleck notes that Project Greenlight was ahead of its time, and they figured this was an opportune moment to bring it project_greenlight-404x600back “now that technology has caught up to the concept.”  Indeed, the advent of digital filmmaking has made it easier than ever for one to create, shoot, and distribute original films, and it’ll be fascinating to see how Project Greenlight incorporates the tech and internet into its contest format.

During its run, the series was an invaluable resource for burgeoning cinephiles, as it offered a candid look at the filmmaking process from inception to production.  It also launched a few careers, including Saw franchise scribe and The Collector director Marcus Dunstan, Hall Pass writer Pete Jones, and Piranha 3DD director John Gulager.

No timetable is given for when Project Greenlight will return, but Affleck and Damon will be back onboard as executive producers.  Sadly, no mention of Project Greenlight standout Chris Moore.

This isn’t the only television project that Affleck and Damon are working on.  The duo have a pilot set up at CBS called More Time With Family starring Alyson Hannigan.  Should CBS order it to series, Affleck and Damon will act as executive producers.

    • This is fantastic! I loved that show, and I’m happy to hear it’s coming back. I believe the second season followed the making of “The Battle of Shaker Heights” with everyone’s favorite: Shia LaBeouf! Classic!
