Marvel’s New “Fantastic Four” Revealed

Though the news that James Robinson would be at the helm of an all-new Fantastic Four title next year had been previously leaked, not much else was known about what was in store for the book. However, that all changed today, and spoiler alert: there are dark times ahead for Marvel’s first family.

Robinson will be teaming up with Leonard Kirk on Fantastic Four #1, part of the All-New Marvel NOW initiative that begins as we head into 2014. While the current Fantastic Four series was a campy family adventure, this new book is clearly anything but, which I can personally say is a bit of a relief.

“We’re going to see the fragmentation of the family due to villainous outside forces that are slowing picking at them and eroding them,” Robinson explains. “The arc I’m going to be telling is basically the fall and the rise of the Fantastic Four, and especially the fall and rise of Johnny Storm.”

According to the article by USA Today, some of Robinson’s plans include the eviction of the FF from the Baxter Building, Thing being imprisoned for murder, Dragon Man getting a death sentence and Franklin’s powers becoming the problem everyone always feared they would be… yup, dark times indeed! Robinson also promised that the FF’s villains would also be back in full force, including a return of the Frightful Four and, of course, Doom.

What’s also interesting is Robinson’s intention to make Johnny Storm a major focus in the book. Johnny’s had the most to deal with of all of them in recent times, and also deals with all of that in the limelight, as the member of the team who has most embraced their celebrity. Now, we’ll see Johnny trying to balance all of that, and how one does that when he’s, as Robinson describes him, “Justin Timberlake times 100.”

If you ask me, there are few characters in the Marvel Universe who seem more out of place and outright outdated than the Fantastic Four, so this new approach couldn’t have come at a better time. These are characters that have an untouchable place in Marvel mythos; it’s time we all have a modern reminder of why, and this creative team is just the folks to do it. Excited for this new book, or has the FF ship sailed for you? Let us know below, and in the meantime, check out this upcoming new cover art for the book!
