Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Go to “The Magical Place”

We’ve made no bones about our disdain for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and yet I can’t stop watching this train wreck. Picking up only 36 hours after Coulson was kidnapped, the gang is fervently tracking down Centipede in the hopes that they’ll also find Coulson. For whatever reason, some guy dealing in stolen alien artifacts has info they need, and Skye gets kicked off the plane because Agent Hand doesn’t think she’s useful enough (hear, hear!).

Unfortunately, Skye’s exile from the plane didn’t mean that we got a break from her. Instead, we have to follow along while she stalks Rob Huebel, steals his car, and then breaks into his house. Side note: she calls his office, using a golf club to dial the phone (so as to avoid leaving prints I assume), but then starts touching everything. Home invader fail! In the end, Skye’s foray off the plane was kind of unnecessary since Agent Hand and the other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents managed to track Centipede down to the Nevada desert without her.

While he’s one of the best characters on the show, I couldn’t understand the whole Cult of Coulson that this episode exhibits. Dozens of S.H.I.E.L.D. teams all in search of just him? Nick Fury and Maria Hill personally calling Agent Hand for updates? Ward and the others blithely accepting that this kind of response for one person is completely justified? Moreover, Raina’s heavy-handed “manipulation” of Coulson isn’t convincing at all. Granted they only have 40 something minutes to work with, but when Coulson goes from outright denial to teary acceptance of Raina’s plan, it’s all a little over the top.

More Over-the-Top Crap

  • Why is a super secret agency putting branding on their stealth devices?
  • Who’s writing lines like, “someone’s hacking the system,” and, “I’m going in,” and how are these actors delivering them with a straight face?
  • Not sure why Skye needed to stop and go shopping before continuing on her mission, but at least she has better looking clothes now.
  • Raina’s Centipede soldiers have a terrible habit of announcing themselves before actually going after the gang.

In spite of myself, though, I am now interested in the why and how of Coulson coming back from the dead. It turns out that he’s not a Life Model Decoy after all, but was actually resurrected after days of being deceased. Why was Nick Fury so intent on bringing him back? How terrible was the revived Coulson really that they had to alter his memory so that he had a will to live again? I sort of care about the answer, but just sort of.
