Marvel to Help the Uninitiated with Free Digital Collections

While we all love different titles and different characters, one thing is true of all comic fans: we love to talk comics. We’ll talk about them to anyone willing to listen, and oftentimes, those who want to listen are those who don’t read comics at all. And, almost inevitably, they bring up one of the most difficult questions to answer in all of comicdom:

“This sounds awesome! If I wanted to get into this, where should I start?”

Getting into comics, particularly those from Marvel or DC, is a daunting task for the uninitiated. With many characters having decades worth of history, it’s always a difficult task to find a good starting point for a new reader. Remember, someone who has a budding interest in comics is going to immediately change their mind if they feel like the only way they can get started is buy buying dozens of trades or hunting down back issues in comic shops they never thought of entering before, especially since they don’t even know who they like yet. Finding a starting point can also be incredibly difficult. Take X-Men, for example. Do you go all the way back to House of M, to understand the impact of “no more mutants?” Do you start at Manifest Destiny, the semi-birth of the “modern” X-Men? Do you start at Schism? AvX? Marvel NOW? There’s no wrong answer here, and that can be overwhelming for someone on the outside looking in.

The Marvel NOW initiative has, in my opinion, been the very best approach to date at making comics accessible for new readers. It offered a launching point that didn’t alienate current readers, but also didn’t leave new fans feeling like they were missing out for having not read anything before. Beginning late this month, the next wave of Marvel NOW begins, offering new fans another opportunity to jump in… but this time, the best has gotten even better.

Marvel has announced that select print issues of their upcoming Marvel NOW titles will come packaged with a code to redeem for a digital copy of that issue. While that’s common practice for Marvel NOW titles, the code in these issues will also unlock a free copy of the first graphic novel collection for that title as well. For example, the code inside Avengers 24.NOW will unlock a free copy of Avengers Volume 1: Avenger’s World, which contains the first six issues of the rebooted Avengers title.

This is frankly one of the most fan-friendly and business-minded moves I’ve ever seen from a major comic publisher. Giving away these collections, as opposed to hoping to collect as much money as possible for them, is a brilliant way to both give back to fans new and old. Not only is it garnering great press for Marvel, it legitimately opens the doors for new fans to come on board equipped with a ton of great stuff to read, without making them pay a ton for it. If you’ve ever wanted to jump in to the Marvel Universe, this is easily the very best time for it.

Below is a list of all the books that will be participating in this promotion. Best of all, all of these books will maintain their standard $3.99 cover price, despite the mountain of free goodies inside. The only exception to this is Avengers 24.NOW, which will be listed as $4.99, but only because the issue itself is oversized. Whether you’re a new fan or old, be sure to pick them up… the value you get for these books is simply too great to pass up, even if they’re titles you may not normally read!
