Marvel Reveals More “Battle of the Atom” Details and Art

The 50th anniversary of the X-Men is fast approaching, and with it comes the next massive X-event, Battle of the Atom. Tying together the four major X-titles (Uncanny X-Men, All-New X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men and X-Men), Battle of the Atom promises to be “an event so exhilarating and so groundbreaking that fans will be talking about this for years to come,” and while they say that about every event, I suspect this time it may very well be true.

Anyone who’s been reading the Marvel NOW X-books knows that All-New X-Men follows the original X-Men team (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Iceman and Beast), who were torn from the past by the present Beast in hopes that their presence would stop present Cyclops’ mutant revolution before it had a chance to really take off. However, this plan has backfired royally, and the team hasn’t been coping well with how awful their futures have turned out to be. Angel has joined present Cyclops’ team, everyone hates past Cyclops for the actions he’ll eventually take, and the duress of the situation has triggered Jean Grey’s psychic powers earlier than they were before, and to say she isn’t handling it well would be an understatement. The only thing the members of the past team have in common? An agreement that they have to stay here, in our present, to ensure they help create a better future for, well, themselves.

However, staying in the present to create their future, while a good idea on paper, is apparently the worst choice they could have made, and may spell the end of mutantkind. At least, that’s what the future X-Men say! In Battle of the Atom, a team of X-Men from the future come to our present with a warning: the past X-Men need to go back to whence they came, or they doom every single mutant. And in true comic book fashion, that warning comes before, during and after several epic battles!

Battle of the Atom comes from the powerhouse team of of Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Brian Wood, Frank Cho, Stuart Immonen, Chris Bachalo, David Lopez and Giuseppe Camuncoli, which is essentially the who’s-who of X-team talent. The event takes place over ten books, and even better, each chapter will be out weekly, meaning the entire ten-part saga takes place across just two months. Check out the reading list and a ton of cover art from the upcoming mega-event below, and start getting pumped up for September and October when Battle of the Atom celebrates 50 years of X-Men with a bang!
