20th Century Fox did pretty well with their live-action Alvin and the Chipmunks adaptations, so Disney is turning to its own Chipmunk team into a new film.  The studio will turn Chip ‘n’ Dale into a feature film that blends live-action and CG after acquiring a pitch from award-winning commercials director Robert Rugan.  First appearing in 1943, the chipmunk pals appeared in numerous Disney cartoons over the years before being reinvented as animal detectives in 1989′s Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers.  Rugan’s pitch takes inspiration from this series.  Hit the jump for more.

Heat Vision reports that Disney has acquired a pitch for a Chip ‘n’ Dale movie.  Rugan will write the updated take on the cartoon critters.  Rugan also has a number of awards under his belt for his work writing and directing shorts and the indie feature, Alice’s Misadventures in Wonderland.  He is currently adapting the book series The Genius Files for Warner Bros. and wrote an original script for Beauregard Thibodeau which he will also direct.

The Chip ‘n’ Dale story is expected to tell the origin tale of the Rescue Rangers detective agency.  Chip was set up as the brains with Dale providing plenty of goofy humor.  The series itself premiered in a two-hour special, which also introduced the adventurous Australian mouse Monterey Jack, the genius mechanic mouse Gadget Hackwrench, and a blue-green housefly named Zipper, who pals around with Jack.
