Launch Woes Continue for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn officially launched yesterday and has been plagued by errors, over populated worlds, and server maintenance that started over the weekend during the “early access” period. Problems of this nature are fairly common with newly released MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game).

Sadly, this isn’t Final Fantasy XIV‘s first rodeo either. The game’s first version launched in September 2010, and was met with negative reviews. Without going into detail, the game was labeled a failure, which lead to Square Enix pulling the plug in November 2012. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (version 2.0) moves the story forward 5 years, giving the game another shot at redemption. Some might consider this launch a missed opportunity for making an excellent “second” first impression.

While I’m not upset about this disastrous launch, I am rather surprised at how ill equipped Square Enix was in handling over populated servers. Players are unable to not only log on, but they can’t even make a new character on the realm of their choosing. Personally, I had to wait 11 hours before a spot opened up for me on Behemoth, just so I could play with my friends. Sure, I could have picked a less populated server, but all of my friends had already started leveling from phase 4 of the beta. Regardless, if I choose to play on a heavy populated server, so be it. Yeah I might have to wait for my spot in a queue, but that choice should be up to me.

Final Fantasy XIV Character Creation

To ensure that we maintain a quality level of service for everyone, we have been setting restrictions on both the creation of characters as well as adjusting the number of users that are able to log in. We are well aware that these restrictions are a source of frustration for our users who are waiting to play.

Assuming the servers are up and running, you still have to worry about whether or not there is room for you. If you’re lucky, you will only have to wait in a relatively small queue for other players to log off. I’ve never really waited longer than 2 minutes once I found myself in a queue. However, the problem I’m most commonly facing is a full server, which unfortunately won’t allow you to wait in the queue. If and when this happens, you simply click OK and return to the character selection screen.

FFXIV World is Full

To address this matter, we are currently working on introducing new Worlds and enhancing the performance of the login and match making processes on both the Japanese and North American & European data centers. This operation is expected to be completed at the beginning of next week.

Early this morning Square Enix had to temporarily suspend the sale of all digital download versions of the game. Really? I’m both shocked and amazed and how crazy these last few days have been. Could Square Enix have taken preventative measures to ensure something like this wouldn’t have happened? Let me just shake my magic eight-ball and see… all signs point to yes.

I would like to add Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is loads of fun and I can’t wait to play it again. Who knows when that will happen, though. On the plus side, Customer Support does like to leave a nice little note when things hit the fan. I expect to be reading “we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this causes our users and humbly request your understanding” over the next few days. Be sure to check back for my full review on FFXIV, provided I ever get the chance to play.
