Late to the Party: Sherlock TV Show Review

OK, it’s official. I’m a Cumberb*tch. The term used for women that are in love with the actor who plays Sherlock in Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch. As I stated in my recent review of Attack on Titan, for some reason I’m late when it comes to great TV shows. Call it a sickness, but lately I’ve been taking full advantage of my Netflix account and binge watching hours and hours of shows that I’ve heard are great. I am not afraid to admit when I’m late to the party with a TV show, so I’ll be reviewing TV shows I come across on streaming services. Are they as “EPIC” as everyone says, or was I right to pass on them the first time? This time I’m taking on the fangirl favorite – Sherlock.

The show is a modern telling of the popular book series about a detective named Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) that solves crimes around London with his helpful companion John Watson (Martin Freeman). He’s smart, witty, and knows everything about you in the first minute of meeting you. I’ve been hearing about how awesome this show is, but only now sat down to watch it – and let me just say, it’s addicting. In typical Lacey-obsessive fashion, I blew through the 3 seasons of this show in about 3 days.

The reason? It’s that damn good. I’m already a sucker when it comes to crime dramas, and this show has it all. To me it’s like the writers took all the best parts of House, Monk, and CSI to create a modern, sexy, smart drama that kept me guessing and glued to the screen. Cumberbatch was made for the role of Sherlock. He embodies everything that Sherlock is and I quickly came to understand why women fall for him. Yes he is attractive, but for me it was his intelligence. Now don’t get me wrong – while Cumberbatch was excellent and leads the show, the supporting cast is just as perfect. Freeman as Watson was another perfect choice. At first my response to seeing him on the screen was “Hey it’s Bilbo!”, but when I rewatched The Hobbit, I found myself thinking “Hey it’s Watson!”

Now the show takes you through several amazing story lines and relationships, but my favorite episode was “The Scandal is Belgravia” (To be fair I think this is every fangirl’s favorite episode). It introduces the character Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), who is a dominatrix with many important secrets in her possession – including ones about British Royalty. Sherlock’s task in this episode is to get back the photos she took of a member of the Royal Family before they are released to the public. Sounds easy enough right? Wrong.

Here’s their first meeting:

Without giving too much away, the rest of the episode is spent showing Sherlock battling between a locked cellphone and his feelings for Irene. Will he outwit her, or for once will he be the one who’s outwitted? My advice is that if you are only going to watch one episode (which you should watch all of them) definitely watch “The Scandal is Belgravia”.

So I think it’s clear: I am Sherlocked. I loved this show from the beginning to the end of Season 3 (WHEN IS SEASON 4 COMING OUT?!?!), and I would absolutely recommend this show to anyone that is interested in crime dramas or just overall awesome TV. The actors are perfect, the writing is “spot-on” as the Brit’s would say, and it kept me entertained the entire time. So what are you waiting for? Don’t you have some Sherlock to watch?!
