Just a few short weeks ago we reported that David S. Goyer’s Krypton project was nearing a pilot order at Syfy, and lo, it has now come to pass. The series is set up as a Superman prequel, and will take place two generations before the the Man of Steel is forced to leave his planet on the brink of destruction.

According to a press release, the series “will follow Superman’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.” As we learned last month, Damien Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) has been set as the showrunner, while Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders) will direct the pilot. Goyer has written the pilot script along with Once Upon a Time’s Ian Goldberg.

krypton-man-of-steel-600x338Bill McGoldrick, Executive Vice President of Scripted Content at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment said,

“Krypton is one of the most iconic stories in the comic book universe. In the talented hands of David S. Goyer and the DC Entertainment/Warner Horizon Television team, this exciting Syfy project will take viewers back to Superman’s home to show how the timeless legend began.”

Last year Goyer said,

“In terms of production value, you have to pick your moments. It will definitely, should we make the show there will definitely be some big moments. It won’t be wall to wall visual effects every single moment, spectacle, in the way that the film will be, but we’ll also be digging into the characters and the culture a lot more.”

Syfy has been hit (Wynonna Earp) and miss (Hunters) with its series lately, and it’s worth noting that DC series not on the CW have not necessarily thrived or been particularly critically acclaimed (CBS is currently deciding what to do with Supergirl, and Gotham on Fox is … what it is). What’s also of note is that Goyer had a hand in working on the scripts for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, so it will be interesting to see how this vision differs from those (and if they will connect to the DCCU at all).
