Kingdoms of Amalur

Sadly, 38 Studios closed its doors in May 2012, but the studio lives on with Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. If by some crazy twist of fate you haven’t heard me ramble on and on about how fun this game is, you can see for yourself this weekend as the Steam Weekend Deal has it listed for $6. Want more? Get a full dose with the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Collection for $12, which includes all DLC for the game.

Kingdoms of Amalur is set in a bright and fantastical world created by NY Times bestselling author R.A. Salvatore (The DemonWars Saga), Todd McFarlane (Spawn), and Ken Rolston (lead designer for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion). This game is loaded with gorgeous environments that will have players wanting to explore every nook and cranny on their map. I encourage you to leave no stone unturned along your journey or you’ll miss out on some fun and interesting lore.

The combat system is both unique and intuitive. Players can swap weapons, magic, and abilities on the fly leading to devastating combos. Furthermore, your character is not bound to any specific class and you may change your fighting style at any point in the game by simply visiting a fate weaver.

When I started my adventure in Amalur, I enjoyed smashing opponents with heavy weapons. However, after coming into contact with some Gypsies, I decided to try a more stealthy approach, and ultimately beat the game as a rogue with poisonous blades. I can’t tell you how much fun I had sneaking up on foes and cutting their throats. Keep in mind, you can mix magic into your attacks and there’s no need to limit yourself in combat.
