The Masters of the Universe movie still doesn’t have a director, but it does have a new writer. Sony has been developing a reboot of the Mattel adaptation for a few years now, with G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu previously attached to take the helm. Chu subsequently departed the project later last year as Pirates of the Caribbean co-writer Terry Rossio came aboard to rewrite the screenplay, but apparently the project still has a significant amount of development left to go, as Kick-Ass 2 writer/director Jeff Wadlow has now signed on to do another rewrite of the script.
Per THR, Wadlow does not have a deal to direct Masters of the Universe at this time, but it remains a possibility down the road. For now, he’ll focus on shaping the screenplay with the hopes of finally putting together a Masters of the Universe movie that Sony can feel confident in. Sony has been working hard to get the Masters of the Universe movie off the ground for some time, and a couple of months ago a shortlist of possible directors surfaced that included The Mortal Instruments helmer Harald Zwart and Another Earth director Mike Cahill. Wadlow was also mentioned as being in the mix, and seeing as how he’s writing the screenplay, one imagines he has a bit of an inside track on the eventual director’s gig. His most recent feature was the so-so action sequel Kick-Ass 2, but he may have a fascinating take on Masters of the Universe that won him the writing job.
