Joss Whedon to write S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot for ABC

Anxious to continue the success of this year’s hit The Avengers, ABC (owned by Disney who also owns Marvel) has asked Joss Whedon to write a pilot based around S.H.I.E.L.D. or Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.  Frequest Whedon contributors Jeb Whedon and Maurissa Tanchareon will write the pilot with Joss and take on the role as showrunners.  So far details are few and far between, but Joss Whedon has stated that, “The storyline for the proposed series will be largely ‘autonomous’ from the Avengers sequel feature that is also in the works,” adding that it’s not a spinoff.  No word on what characters will be featured in the series, but this might be a great oppurtunity to bring back fan favorite Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), as his involvement would not impact the upcoming Avengers sequel.  That assumes that the series is set before The Avengers, but no official word has been made.  Even though Joss will not be the showrunner he assured us that he’ll show up every now and then and take credit for everything.

What do you think?  Are you excited to see more of S.H.I.E.L.D.?  What heroes would you like to see from time to time?

hmmm, Joss Whedon with the ability to write a large ensemble cast piece on a network that won't cancel it after moving it 17 times (that's right Fox, I'm looking at you)? HOORAY!!!!!!!!! Now it will just be a bet to see which previous Joss show actors will be on the show. Yes, I know he's not running it, but as the writer, he can probably strongly suggest people who would be a good idea for the role!

    • This is interesting because there is supposed to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie in development, which discusses its origins and adds backstory to the members. I wonder if this is in place of that or a supplements the idea.
