Jesse Plemons Being Considered for a Role in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

It’s been a little too quiet on the Star Wars: Episode VII news front lately. Hopefully that means this is the calm before the storm as production is set to begin in a few months, and with that we hope to be inundated with joyous news from a galaxy far, far away.  It appears that Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad) is being eyed for a lead role.  Nothing is official yet and Plemons hasn’t been cast, but he’s reportedly returning to audition again for director J.J. Abrams.  His first audition, one that was taped and sent in, was apparently received well enough to land him a second go, this time in a face-to-face meeting with Abrams himself.  Nothing about the potential role has been revealed just yet, but it’s possible that Plemons is being sought to play an offspring of Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker.

News of Abrams’ interest in Plemons for Star Wars: Episode VII comes courtesy of The Wrap. I initially noticed Plemons in his first big role as Landry Clark on Friday Night Lights, a show I still hold as one of the greatest shows of all time, and his vulnerable and endearing take on a high school outsider made him one of the reasons I tuned in. He’s also appeared in such recent feature films as Paul, Battleship and The Master. Plemons’ upcoming credits include Tommy Lee Jones’ The Homesman, and Stephen Frears’ untitled Lance Armstrong biopic.

If he does indeed play Luke’s kid that will be interesting. In the expanded universe of Star Wars, Luke has one son named Ben, with Mara Jade Skywalker. Star Wars is big on naming their characters after other characters, see Anakin Solo. Ben is troubled early on as he views the force as a source of negativity and strife because he is born during the war with the Yuuzhan Vong. His attempts to separate himself from his father and make his mark in the universe caused him to team up with his cousin Jacen Solo who would eventually fall to the dark side, and Solo’s single mindedness would catapult Ben back to Luke and the pair would spend a significant time traveling the universe to discover the mysteries of the force. Based on the roles we have seen Plemons in, I think he would be an amazing Ben Skywalker, a little older than I imagined, but he has the acting range to pull it off.
