James DeMonaco, The Purge 2, Will It Suck?!

Posted on November 6, 2013 at 7:32 am by Jess Hicks

Earlier today Variety reported that writer/director James DeMonaco would be returning to write and direct the sequel to 2013’s crime thriller, The Purge. The sequel was put into motion merely a week after the first dominated in the box office, making a whopping $34 million it’s opening weekend. Not too shabby for a film made for $3 million.

The deal for the sequel is still being worked out with Universal and Blumhouse who are working on getting a huge tax-credit from the state of California. If the tax credit is granted it could cover up to 25% of their entire budget as long as they meet certain requirements and schedules.

I wasn’t a huge fan of The Purge, it was a great idea but failed to deliver the punch it really needed. DeMonaco has some great ideas but I think they need external forces to really do them justice. Perhaps with major financial help from California the sequel could get off to a better start. In the meantime what do you think of a sequel to the film? Nothing has been revealed in way of the plot though I believe it will pick up right where the last ended. In case you missed it check out Justin’s review of The Purge!

Bleh! Saw the first one on Halloween and was NOT impressed! Like Justin said on his initial review, if they show more of the world, that may zero us in a bit more on the idea, but unless there’s a lot different, that’s a big pass.
